K - to - 12 Curriculum Guide

In the desire of the government to make the Filipino graduates globally competitive and with enough competency skills for higher  education / vocational courses and employment and entrepreneurship, the old curriculum of the Philippine Education system which for ages had been the core the guide of private and public schools is now replaced by the new K to 12 Curriculum.

With the new curriculum, the  Technical Working Committee in partnership with the heads of DEPED, CHED and TESDA  has given schools the K to 12 Curriculum Guide for minimum requirements, so, students with unfavorable conditions can still catch up with the standards.

The new curriculum requires that students must go through 5 stages: pre - school / kindergarten, elementary, junior high school, senior high school, and tertiary.  Whether a high school student wishes to proceed to college or simply work, then, he has the competency skills to get employed.

The new curriculum has the following features:

  1. vertical continuum and horizontal articulation of competencies
  2. mother tongues as medium of instruction and as a learning area
  3. Spiral progression in Science and Math
  4. MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health) starts in Grade 1
It is hoped that the new curriculum can indeed produce holistically developed students and can make Filipino graduates competitive with other graduates from abroad.
